
Ah, August. It's supposed to be a time of holidays, flip-flops, and cocktails, but sometimes life just gets in the way. If you can't get time off work in the next few weeks, or you end up getting struck down with the dreaded summer flu, Netflix is here to help.
The streaming giant is launching more high-quality titles this month, including the ultimate #GapYearGoals movie, The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The Other Boleyn Girl, an underrated period drama starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, is also on its way.
If you fancy binging on a classic British sitcom, two complete series of Richard Curtis and Ben Elton's Blackadder are joining the UK library. Fans of the horror and comic book genres are catered for too, with a new film adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, and the eagerly-anticipated superhero series The Defenders.

All Stars (2013)
Family-friendly movie about a couple of kids who bring together a group of misfits to put on a show for their local youth centre.

Atypical (2017)
This Netflix original series is a coming-of-age comedy with a twist: lead character Sam ( It Follows ' Keir Gilchrist) is an 18-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. The excellent Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars as his mother, suggesting this show is definitely one to watch out for.

Bad Rap (2017)
A compelling documentary film about four Asian-American young people trying to break into the world of rap and hip-hop. One of the profiled youngsters, rapper-actress Awkafina, has since been cast in Ocean's 8 alongside Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, and Sandra Bullock.

Blackadder (1987-9)
Two series of the classic historical sitcom starring Rowan Atkinson: Blackadder the Third takes place in Regency England; Blackadder Goes Forth is set in the trenches of World War One. Written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, the jokes come thick and fast.

Boyz n the Hood (1991)
This brilliant coming-of-age film, which takes place in south central L.A., is now recognised as a seminal exploration of young Black masculinity. The cast includes Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, and Angela Bassett.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
A supremely affecting movie based on the life of Ron Woodroof, an initially homophobic Texan man who was diagnosed with AIDS, then ended up smuggling unapproved but effective HIV/AIDS medication into the US to help him and other patients. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both won Oscars for their performances.

Death Note(2017)
This Netflix original horror film is based on a popular Japanese manga series. The Fault In Our Stars ' Nat Wolff plays a Seattle teenager who discovers a supernatural notebook, the Death Note, that allows him to kill any person he wants simply by writing their name down on a page. The Leftovers ' Margaret Qualley co-stars.

Dickensian (2015)
Created by Tony Jordan, EastEnders ' former lead writer, this ambitious BBC drama series brings together classic characters from a range of different Charles Dickens novels. If you like the idea of seeing Miss Havisham and Ebenezer Scrooge in the same show, Dickensian is probably for you.

Dinotrux (2017)
Fifth season of the popular computer-animated kids' series. It's set in a prehistoric world and features characters that are part dinosaur and part –you've guessed it–truck.

Disjointed(2017)
A new Netflix sitcom co-created by genre maestro Chuck Lorre ( The Big Bang Theory, Mom, Roseanne). Oscar winner Kathy Bates stars as a "cannabis legend" who hires her son and his mates to help her run an L.A. marijuana dispensary.

DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge (2017)
A fifth season of the computer-animated kids' series based on the hit DreamWorks movie, How to Train Your Dragon. The voice cast includes Ugly Betty 's America Ferrera.

Fantastic Four(2015)
This superhero reboot is no masterpiece, but a strong cast led by Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, and Miles Teller are always watchable.

Brand new animated kids' series about four girls who summon their inner superheroes to defeat an evil king and his minions.

Godzilla (2014)
A very watchable monster blockbuster that benefits from a strong cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche.

Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh (2017)
A third season of the animated kids' series based on the hit DreamWorks movie Home. It centres on a friendship between a fearless young girl and her super-enthusiastic alien companion.

Icarus(2017)
A hit at Sundance earlier this year, this gripping documentary film lifts the lid on the enormous Russian doping scandal that rocked the world of sport. From 2011 to 2015, more than a thousand Russian competitors in various sports - including the Summer and Winter Olympics - were implicated.

Love & Mercy (2014)
Paul Dano and John Cusack play young and middle-aged versions of Brian Wilson in this solid biopic of the troubled Beach Boys genius. The always-awesome Elizabeth Banks co-stars as Melinda Ledbetter, a sympathetic car saleswoman who would become his wife.

M andela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
Idris Elba stars in this suitably stirring film about the late, great Nelson Mandela. He's just as fantastic as you'd expect, and Moonlight 's Naomie Harris turns in another stellar performance as Mandela's wife, Winnie.

Marvel's The Defenders(2017)
Finally! This eight-part series unites the Marvel superheroes from four other hit Netflix shows: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and of course Jessica Jones. If they work together, they might just be able to save New York City from the rising threat of crime.

Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo (2017)
A superior documentary film that shines a spotlight - deservedly - on the behind-the-scenes team who helped to put a man on the moon.

Naked (2017)
A Netflix original comedy film staring Marlon Wayans and Regina Hall. Every time Rob Anderson (Wayans) comes close to marrying the woman of his dreams, he wakes up naked in a hotel elevator, and has to relive the pain of his wedding day.

Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later (2017)
Two years ago, Netflix brought back the characters from cult comedy film Wet Hot American Summer for a very funny prequel series. Now comes this sequel to the prequel, featuring much the same cast of comedy faves. Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Jason Schwarzman, Chris Pine, Ken Marino, and Elizabeth Banks will all appear across the eight episodes.
